Page Mill Evacuation Route Project

Project Description

Portions of Page Mill Road in Los Altos Hills, California represent a significant thoroughfare for the Los Altos Hills Community. This road serves as egress and ingress in the case of fire. To secure this egress / ingress’ integrity, the Los Altos Hills County Fire District proposes a roadside treatment of fuels. The project will start south of the intersection of Arastradero Road and Page Mill Road, south of the Caltrans easement, and head south by southwest towards Foothills Nature Preserve ending at the Fire District’s jurisdiction line.

When there's a path, as shown here, the easement allows for trimming and additional 1 foot on each side of the path.

Hazardous vegetation, including brush, grasses, and tree limbs, is cleared to the fence line.

Low-growing tree branches and excess vegetation are cut away from the lower portion of the trees to create a separation between the tree canopy and ground fuels. Vegetation will be trimmed back from intersections to reduce fuels and maintain the line of sight for the safety of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Weeds, grasses and ground vegetation within the public right of way are trimmed to shorter than 6".

 

Project Site

The project includes only the portion of Page Mill Road in Los Altos Hills. The project starts south of the intersection of Arastradero Road, south of the Caltrans easement, at approximately 37°23’05.5″N 122°09’56.7″W. The project progresses south by southwest towards Foothills Nature Preserve. For the west side of Page Mill Road, the project will conclude northeast of the Foothill Nature Preserve Park entrance, after including the last lot of the Altamont Hills development, track 3975, at approximately 37°21’51.1″N 122°10’06.3″W.

Treatment of the east side of Page Mill Road will commence beyond the intersection of Moody Road to include the Page Mill Road curb line abutting 10920 Page Mill Road. This location is approximately 37°21’29.5″N 122°10’25.8″W. The project will treat the east side of Page Mill Road, concluding at the intersection of Baleri Ranch Road, at approximately 37°23’05.6″N 122°09’56.2″W.

The length of road in the project area is 3 miles heading south by southwest on Page Mill Road and 3.5 miles heading north by northeast on Page Mill Road. The total treatment will be 6.5 miles for both sides of the road.

2020 June Initial Treatment Phase 1

Initial treatment Phase 1 treated the South half of Page Mill Road:

• The West side of Page Mill Road from Altamont Road to the Los Altos Hills County Fire District Boundary at 26443 Page Mill Road
• The East side of Page Mill Road from Altamont Road to the Los Altos Hills County Fire District Boundary at 10920 Page Mill Road
