Your Guide to Inclement Weather Emergency Preparedness

  1. Stay informed! Sign up for emergency alerts at AlertSCC.org.
  2. Download the PG&E Report It app to submit concerns about vegetation, poles, and powerlines.
  3. Take steps to prepare for inclement weather or other emergencies: lahcfd.org/prep

HOME HARDENING AGAINST WILDFIRES

Make Your Home Wildfire Ready

  1. Schedule a Hazardous Ignition Zone (HIZ) Assessment
  2. Seal gaps around windows, doors, and vents with fire-resistant material to prevent embers from entering.
  3. Cover attic and foundation vents with 1/8” or 1/16” mesh screen to prevent embers from entering.

Planting a Fire-Resistant Landscape

  3. Use our Defensible Space Vegetation Removal Monthly Drop Off program

Building a Resilient Neighborhood Network

  1. Connect with 3-5 nearby homes to create a support system.

  3. Discuss what you can contribute, such as radio communication, medical expertise, or backup power, to enhance neighborhood preparedness.

CRIME PREVENTION & HOME FIRE SAFETY MONTH

Prioritizing Crime Prevention & Fire Safety

  1. Take a class on fraud and crime prevention, including common scams and ID theft.
  2. Verify smoke/carbon monoxide alarms are working and fire extinguishers are pressurized.
  3. Know your trusted community resources. Use 2-1-1 for essential services.

END OF SUMMER FAMILY SAFETY CHECK IN

Emergency Preparedness for Fall

  1. Update emergency contacts at home and school.
  2. Practice fire drills and evacuations with your family and teach kids how to call 911.
  3. Pack a small emergency kit for family members (cars or backpacks), including snacks, water, a flashlight, and a first aid kit.

  1. Create or update your emergency kit.
  2. Review and practice your emergency plan including meet up locations, communication methods, and evacuation routes.
  3. Help your neighbors: Stay informed, educate others, and encourage neighbors to sign up for AlertSCC.

Earthquake Safety & Readiness

  1. Secure heavy furniture to the wall to prevent tipping.
  2. Practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”
  3. Create an earthquake kit with water, non-perishable food, flashlight, first aid kit, and sturdy shoes.

EMERGENCY POWER & HANDLING OUTAGES

Backup Power

  1. Ensure you have an emergency backup power source, such as a portable generator, solar system, or backup batteries.
  2. Stock up on batteries for flashlights, radios, and other devices.
  3. Consider getting solar-powered chargers for your phones.

HOLIDAY SEASON SAFETY & FIRE PREVENTION

Protecting Your Home with Holiday Fire Safety

  1. Check holiday lights for frayed wires or loose connections, and turn off those lights when you leave the house.
  2. Prevent home fires by maintaining clearance around space heaters, fireplaces, kitchen appliances, and other heat sources.
  3. Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors for proper functioning.
