Be Ready Be Prepared: Fire Extinguishers and Holiday SafetyRemember, fire hazards increase during the holidays.

  • Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors for proper functioning and practice your home fire escape plan.
  • Plan your routes, check weather alerts, and have a family communication plan in case of emergencies during holiday travel or gatherings.
  • Check holiday lights for frayed wires or loose connections and turn off those lights when you leave the house.
  • Keep decorations away from heat sources, use flame-resistant ornaments.
  • Prevent home fires by maintaining clearance around space heaters, fireplaces, kitchen appliances, and other heat sources.

When detected early, fires can be extinguished by portable fire extinguishers, potentially saving lives and property.

Presented by Fire Captain Denise Gluhan (ret.), LAHCFD Community Education and Risk Reduction Manager 

Fire Captain Gluhan (ret.) retired from the Santa Clara County Fire Department in December 2018 and joined the Los Altos Hills County Fire District in 2019. She provides community education and information to the residents of Los Altos Hills, including emergency preparedness, wildfire preparedness, and the Firewise USA program.
