Black Mountain-Purissima Evacuation Route Project – Completed March 2024
The Black Mountain Road – Purissima Road Evacuation Route Project in Los Altos Hills, California, provides an important route of egress route for a significant portion of the Western area of the Los Altos Hills Community in the event of a wildfire evacuation. To secure the integrity of this route, Los Altos Hills County Fire District and Santa Clara County FireSafe Council propose a roadside treatment of hazardous fuels.

Page Mill Road Maintenance Project – Completed June 2023
LAHCFD partnered with Santa Clara County FireSafe Council (SCC FSC) on this project, which reduced the amount of hazardous fire vegetation, such as brush, grasses, tree limbs, and dead, dying, and diseased vegetation along Page Mill Road. Goat Grazing at Byrne Preserve – May 2023
The LAHCFD uses goats as an alternative form of vegetation mitigation and fire fuel management in the difficult-to-reach terrain of Byrne Open Space Preserve. The arrival of the goats is a tradition that marks the bucolic arrival of spring in the Hills. The goats graze on low-hanging branches, brush, and flashy fire fuels of Byrne Preserve.
- Celebrate the arrival of Spring and the Goats at our goat grazing “Flash Mob” event. We’ll have coffee and pastries, and education about vegetation mitigation (details to be shared via social media)

Arastradero Road Evacuation Route Project – Completed December 2022
Arastradero Road represents a significant thoroughfare for the Los Altos Hills Community and exists as an egress option in case of fire. The project route began at the intersection Arastradero Road, Page Mill Road, and the I-280 park-and-ride, heading southeast towards Fremont Road. The route was approximately 2-miles long, with treatment on both sides of the road, resulting in 4-miles of treatment. The goals were to reduce roadside fuels to improve the safety of this evacuation route, improve visibility and travel safety, and to reduce the risk of roadside fire ignition.

Altamont Road Evacuation Route and Road Hardening Project – completed May 2022
Altamont Road connects to previous Evacuation Route Projects along Page Mill Road and Moody/El Monte Roads. It provides residents and travelers with two ways out along the adjourning key roads that are evacuation-route-prepared because of the removal of hazardous vegetation along the roadways. This 2.2-mile project is the primary egress option for residents along Altamont Road while serving as an alternate evacuation route for Page Mill and Moody/El Monte Roads communities.

Moody/El Monte Roads Evacuation Route and Road Hardening Project – completed November 2021
Moody and El Monte Roads represent a significant thoroughfare for the Los Altos Hills Community and serve as a continuous path from Page Mill Road to Highway 280. To secure the integrity of these roads for ingress and egress in an emergency, we worked with Santa Clara County FireSafe Council to treat roadside fire fuels. Treatment included trimming woody vegetation, pruning trees, clearing dead materials, and clearing hazard trees that may fall onto roads and block the routes. This 3.5-mile project improved visibility and travel safety while reducing the risk of roadside fire ignition.
